Satellite, balloon and ground-based measurements of electromagnetic manifestations of thunderstorms

Project goals

Proposed project will provide us with a unique opportunity to analyze electromagnetic manifestations of the thunderstorm activity on a sattelite, on a stratospheric balloon and at a ground station using the same or similar instrumentation for all these measurements. We would like to study different types of thunderstorm phenomena using the analysis of electromagnetic waves that are generated during these discharges. The key part of the project is our participation in the scientific instrument IME-HF for the TARANIS (Tool for the Analysis of Radiation from lightNIng and Sprites) spacecraft. We also plan to perform the measurements at the stratospheric balloon COBRAT (Coupled Observations from Balloon Related to ASIM and TARANIS). We will use a similar instrumentation BLESKA (Broadband Electric Lightning Keeper Signal Analyzer). This analyzer will measure fluctuations of electric or magnetic field in frequency range up to 50 MHz. BLESKA will be also used for systematic long-term measurements at a ground station and during international measurement campaigns.

    Navrhovaný projekt nám poskytne jedinečnou příležitost měřit a analyzovat elektromagnetické projevy bleskových výbojů na družici, na stratosférickém balónu a na pozemních stanicích stejným typem přístroje. Budeme studovat různé typy elektromagnetických projevu bouřkové aktivity pomocí analýzy elektromagnetických vln, které jsou generovány těmito výboji. Analyzátor BLESKA určený pro pozemní měření bude použit pro systematické dlouhodobé měření fluktuací elektrického nebo magnetického pole v kmitočtovém rozsahu až 50 MHz a také během mezinárodních měřících kampaní

    The project gives a new interesting insight to the processes occurring inside thunderclouds. Besides scientific implications and strengthening of international cooperation, some of the results have been used for the education purposes (student projects, defended Bc. thesis). Number of peer-reviewed papers in highly-impacted journals (15 x Jimp) is above standard in given discipline.
