The strategy for minimizing the impact of drought on sustainable production and barley malting quality
Project goals
The aim of the project is mainly all to find the barley genotypes - the bearers of the malting quality suitable for the periods with a higher occurrence of dry times during the growing season, which happen more and more frequently and their further spreading in the future is presumed namely in the main barley growing production areas. In spring barley, genotypes more capable to cope with the drought which at the same time will be the bearers of the malting quality be explored. In winter barley, the genotypes with the malting quality will be explored. Their fast development in spring due to possibility to use winter moisture gives them a greater chance of escaping drought in the period of caryopses formation and maturation.

Strategie minimalizace dopadu sucha na udržitelnou produkci a sladovnickou kvalitu ječmene

Project results evaluation
All of the mandatory outputs were achieved, plus additional 25 results beyond the project framework were produced. Following the development of methodologies "Phenotyping of drought tolerance in spring barley" and "Evaluation of root system architecture and osmotic adjustment in barley", contracts for their use were concluded. The methodology called Evaluation of drought tolerance in cereals at early stages of plant growth was developed and certified, providing breeders with information on genetic resources for breeding new varieties of malting barley.
