Protection and Conservation of Heritage Aircraft

Environmental conditions and climate change are crucial sources of cultural heritage degradation and damage. The PROCRAFT project has the ambition to save heritage aircrafts, particularly aircraft wrecks inherited from WWII, and will propose sustainable conservation and protection of these wrecks. For protection purposes the invasive conservation techniques will be combined with non-invasive techniques consisting in preventive conservation procedures. These procedures are based on active climate control and thorough knowledge of heritage sites as regards environmental conditions, climate change etc. In situ measurements at representative sites throughout Europe will allow to assess the real damage impact of environmental conditions and climate change on the heritage aircrafts, recognized by authorities as a part of cultural heritage in recent decades. Appropriate sustainable protection strategies, also from previous projects, are further developed and applied adequately to the heritage aircraft sites.
