This consortium aims to develop and validate new non-invasive treatment options for PD by electrical and mechanical (ultrasound) transcranial stimulation of the deep brain structures. The project covers five areas: (1) Using electric interference (TIF) to target GPi of PD patients; (2) Using LIFUS to target the STN, substantia nigra (SN) and GPi; (3) Using a combination of two stimulation modalities to test for synergistic neuro-modulator effects in experimental rats and patients, by incrementing conventional tACS frequencies and lowering LIFUS frequencies to the same range of ~ 150 kHz; (4) Exploring additive neuromodulator effects of transcranial US stimulation (tUSS), tACS and static or oscillating magnetic field (MF) by converting technologies used for non-invasive imaging; (5) Using primary neuronal cultures and experimental rats, to elucidate mechanisms of neuro-stimulation, optimal operational range and safety margins, and exploring avenues for sensitization of selected neurons to the US, ACS and static magnetic fields (SMF).
