    As the primary goal of the project, we will focus on developing methods to grow thin films of the topological materials ZrTe5 and HfTe5. For example, ZrTe5 is a fascinating topological material that has garnered significant attention due to its unique electronic properties. It exhibits a topological phase transition, which can be tuned by factors such as temperature, pressure, or doping, allowing it to switch between a weak topological insulator, a strong topological insulator, or a Dirac semimetal state. The ability to make in situ thin films of these materials would greatly increase their application potential.
