The Origin of the States-Preceding-Actions Inference

This project aims to uncover the source of the state-before-event inference. We hypothesize that this strategy arises from general cognition rather than language. Two predictions follow from this hypothesis: First, that this strategy holds across languages; and second, that it holds across modalities. We will conduct the same two experiments in nine languages. Experiment 1 will be a language-based task; Experiment 2 will be a vision-based task. In each country involved in this project, we will collect data in several languages. Selected languages represent a diverse range of typological properties.
