High-accuracy ion-based optical clocks

To date, the smallest systematic uncertainty of an optical clock has been reported for a clock that uses the reference transition of a single trapped ion. However, whilst single ions can provide the highest level of accuracy, it requires weeks of averaging to reduce the statistical uncertainty to below 10‑18. As this is a direct result of the quantum nature of the reference system, much faster averaging is expected when using more ions and reference transitions with higher frequencies. In this project experimental techniques will be used to realise such ion-based optical clocks using multiple ions or transitions with higher frequencies and ensure they have the highest level of accuracy and stability. Such optical clocks will be developed, and their performance will then be demonstrated by inter-comparisons.
