Development of conservation methods for seals and textile materials used for their attachment

Project goals

The aim of the project is both the revision of traditional conservation methods for historical seals and materials used for their attachment and the development of new methods which would reflect the present state of knowledge, technological possibilities and ethical standards. The project will focus on the most common sealing and attachment materials present in archival repositories and on their most important types of damage. This is predominantly case of the conservation of fragmented beeswax seals, corroded lead bullae and methods for cleaning, disinfection and consolidation of textile attachment materials. For the accomplishment of these aims, a more detailed insight into the degradation phenomena involved would be necessary.

    Vývoj metod konzervování pečetí a jejich textilních závěsů

    Cílem řešení projektu je jednak revize tradičních postupů konzervování historických pečetí a jejich závěsů, jednak vývoj nových metodik, které by odpovídaly současnému stavu poznání, materiálovým možnostem a etickým standardům. Pozornost bude zaměřena na ty historické pečetní látky a závěsné materiály, které ve sbírkách a archivních fondech převažují, a jejichž typická poškození jsou nejzávažnější. Jedná se o především o problém restaurování fragmentovaných pečetí ze včelího vosku, konzervování olověných bul poškozených korozí a metody čištění, dezinfekce a konsolidace textilních závěsných materiálů. Předpokladem naplnění uvedených cílů je také prohloubení porozumění degradačním procesům, kterým sfragistický materiál podléhá.

    A project focused on the issue of conservation and qualified care for an important part of historical archival documents – seals and their curtains. The project focused on study of possibility of gluing fragmented wax seals; testing of materials for the reconstruction of damaged beeswax seals; influence of current conservation method on the properties of shellac seals; methodology for preserving lead bulbs; study of the possibilities of disinfection and cleaning of textile seal hinges. The project was solved systematically and at high professional level. All planned goals and results of the project were successfully fulfilled.
