In the first phase of the project there was created a research team consisting of both the original researchers of the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the CAS, as well as newly hired employees, incl. researcher from Cambridge. The team was headed by a leading foreign scientist, who prepared the main research concept oriented towards basic neuroscientific research aimed at using the results in medicine in the treatment of serious diseases and injuries of the central nervous system. The research agenda was divided into the following areas: reconnection in the adult brain using axonal regeneration of sensory axons; bioactive carriers to bridge damaged nerve tissue; restoring plasticity in the adult CNS by modulating perineuronal networks; protection of the damaged nervous system using stem cells; reconnection in the adult brain using axonal regeneration of the corticospinal pathway.
