Cosmology, Gravity and the Dark Sector of the Universe

Project goals

The CoGraDS project is focused on research on key cosmology topics, namely the nature of dark matter and dark energy and the validity of Einstein's general theory of relativity in the context of current and planned European and American space science missions. The project, which also includes work on the construction of the largest survey ground telescope LSST and the development and characterization of modern photosensors, should bring new knowledge about the physics of the origins and evolution of the universe on large and small scales. Research is conducted by an international group of scientists at the newly established Central European Institute for Cosmology and Fundamental Physics (CEICO) at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences. The task of CEICO is to provide space for young researchers from the region as well as to attract already established scientists from abroad and at the same time to contribute to the visibility of Czech science abroad.

Projekt CoGraDS je zaměřen na výzkum klíčových témat kosmologie, tedy povahu temné hmoty a temné energie a platnosti Einsteinovy obecné teorie relativity, v kontextu současných i plánovaných evropských i amerických vesmírných vědeckých misí. Projekt, jehož součástí je rovněž práce na stavbě největšího přehlídkového pozemního dalekohledu LSST a vývoj i charakterizace moderních fotosenzorů, by měl přinést nové poznatky o fyzice počátků a vývoje vesmíru na velkých i malých škálách. Výzkum provádí mezinárodní skupina vědců v nově založeném Středoevropském institutu pro kosmologii a základní fyziku (Central European Institute for Cosmology and Fundamental Physics - CEICO) ve Fyzikálním ústavu Akademie věd. Úkolem CEICO je poskytnout prostor jak mladým výzkumníkům z regionu, tak přitáhnout již etablované vědce ze zahraničí a zároveň přispět ke zviditelnění české vědy v zahraničí.

Project contributed to the establishment and upgrading of a research centre dedicated to understanding gravity and the origin of the dark matter. The project funds were used to purchase and upgrade powerful computer clusters for cosmology and fundamental physics. These clusters enabled members of the CoGraDS research team to perform complex cosmological simulations and other challenging numerical operations. As part of the building of the new R&D centre there was also established a new laboratory for testing and characterisation of photosensors, offering a large amount of high-end equipment. The success and attractiveness of the centre is evidenced also by the high level of interest from foreign scientists - over 6 dozen applicants from all over the world applied for the competition for the new research team. The CoGraDS project team has been successful in obtaining national grants as well as internationally and has also been successful in strengthening international cooperation.
