The REMAP project had three main scientific goals, which were focused on the study of meiosis in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. These included the identification and functional characterization of new genes involved in meiotic progression, the introduction of real-time imaging of plant meiosis and the development of a protocol for the delivery of biologically active compounds to plant meiocytes. All these goals were successfully met. The REMAP project helped to develop and characterize a Ku protein inhibitor. This substance causes telomere shortening and arrests the cell cycle of human cells in the S-phase. Further development of this substance may lead to anti-tumor drugs. This research was the subject of two patent applications. The first patent describes a Ku inhibitor and its effect on tumor cells, and the second describes a method to determine the specificity of the inhibitor in a chemical screen.
