Surface Physics Laboratory - Materials Science Beamline II

Project goals

Research Infrastructure SPL-MSB is the Czech laboratory, member of the the European research infrastructure CERIC-ERIC. Laboratory consists of two parts, the Optical Beamline for Materials Science (MSB) at the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste and the Surface Physics Laboratory (SPL) in Prague. The main goal of the project is increase of quality of the international research and degree of its utilization. It will be achieved by upgrading the research infrastructure by acquiring a new instrument of the automatic photoelectron spectrometer for high pressure operando measurements.

  • Project results evaluation

The project made it possible to expand the portfolio of the large research infrastructure of SPL-MSB with advanced equipment for electron spectroscopy for the chemical analysis of materials in the conditions of real environments. This is a new analysis that overcomes the barriers of standard XPS systems by allowing analyzes at pressures much higher than UHV. The name NAP-XPS (Near Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) is used for this new method, which represents the latest trend combining basic and applied research methods and contributes to effective technology transfer.
