Design, preparation aand characterization of novel types of optical microresonators for chemical detection
Project goals
This project is aimed at the development of novel glass or silica microresonators which have been increasingly used in optical sensors to detect very small changes in the external refractive index (RI). The detection is based on spectral shifts of resonances of the whispering-gallery modes (WGM) in the resonator caused by changes in the RI. In the project, disk resonators with circular, elliptical, round quadrangular and round hexagonal cross-sections will be investigated theoretically and experimentally. All the above resonators are expected to have much simpler WGM structure than the currently used microsphere resonators, which would be a great advantage for sensing. Methods for the fabrication of the investigated resonators will be developed. The numerical analysis will concentrate on finding the WGM structure, spectral characteristics of resonances, sensitivity to RI changes and areas with high sensitivity on the boundary. Spectral characteristics of resonances will be measured and a set-up with aselected resonator allowing for stable WGM excitation will be built and tested.
