Design and development of extractants for radionuclides based on boron cluster anions
Project goals
The aim of the Project is continuation in the design and development of new extractants based on the derivatives of hydrophobic cluster boron ions for separation of fission products from nuclear waste, mainly actinides/ lanthanides (An/ Ln, eventually Csand Sr). The research will be directed to optimization of the molecular structures to enable good efficiency, easier stripping, solubility in less polar solvent systems, high chemical and radiation stability and selectivity, this for An will be particularly adressed. Another aim is deeper elucidation of the extraction mechanism using these ionic extractans and reflection of this knowledge into molecular design, especially in respect to easier re-extraction. Expected result is definition of several potentially interesting extractants, which would meet requirements for their direct application in the highly active nuclear waste technology and reprocessing of spent fuel from nuclear power stations. New sensors and analytical devices with high affinitiesand selectivities towards Ln and An can form additional output of the Project. A close interdisciplinary collaboration of Groups from the field of inorganic cluster synthesis with radiochemists specialized in separation methods, extraction studies and nuclear technology seems essential to fulfil the requirements of the Project.

Project name in Czech
Vývoj a optimalizace extrakčních činidel pro radionuklidy založených na borových klastrových aniontech
