Transformations in Czech urban and regional system: from hierarchial organization to polycentric settlement
Project goals
This research project analyzes and evaluates transformations in the Czech urban and regional system during two decades after the collapse of Communism. Through its focus on growth and decline, concentration and deconcentration processes, formation and development of daily urban systems and integrated polycentric settlement systems and typology of settlement systems at meso-regional level it aims to capture the dynamics of the transformations in spatial patterns and key processes that have been reshaping the organization of the Czech settlement system in 1991-2011. It is innovative through the employment of relational perspective in the study of transformation from hierarchical organization to more polycentric settlement systems. It aims to enhance the existing international debates through the integration of micro-regional perspective stressing that the backbone of national settlement and regional systems is formed by an integrated network of large as well as small and medium-sized cities and towns that play the role of microregional centers.

Transformace sídelního a regionálního systému Česka: od hierarchické organizace k polycentrickému osídlení

Výzkumný projekt analyzuje a hodnotí transformace v českém sídelním a regionálním systému, k nimž došlo během posledních dvou desetiletí od konce komunistického režimu. Zaměřením analýz na růst, koncentrační a dekoncentrační tendence, utváření a rozvoj denních městských systémů a integrovaných polycentrických sídelních systémů a typologii sídelních systémů na mezoregionální úrovni se pokouší zachytit transformační dynamiku v prostorových strukturách a klíčové procesy, které měnily organizaci českého osídlení v letech 1991-2011. Inovativním metodickým aspektem je použití relační perspektivy při studiu proměny od hierarchické organizace k polycentrickým formám osídlení. Projekt se pokouší obohatit současné mezinárodní diskuse prostřednictvím integrace mikroregionální perspektivy, které zdůrazňuje, že páteří sídelního a regionálního systému na národní úrovni je integrovaná síť velkých a také malých a středních měst hrajících roli mikroregionálních center.

Project results evaluation
Scientific contribution is justified but not supported by 3-4 promised articles. Until now, 2 journal articles and 3 acceptable book chapters (with multinominal dedication) were published. Final monograph is missing. Problems with input data of unexpected nature and scope have prevented timely completion of the project. In the longer term, more outputs could come from the project than promised.
