The Encyclopaedia of Czech Samizdat I – Literary Samizdat
Project goals
The aim of the project is to create an Encyclopedia of Czech Literary Samizdat as a first step towards a general Encyclopedia of Czech Samizdat. By means of individual entries, the authors intend to map and characterize both fundamental and marginal samizdat editions, journals, periodicals and anthologies, as well as to introduce key figures who helped create and maintain the samizdat subculture. The core of the list of entries is from the period 1948-1989, although many entries will refer to a wider context, overlapping the main period and pointing out connections between Czech samizdat and similar activities in the Central Europe of the time; in justified cases they also cross the border from samizdat towards independent culture in general.

Záměrem projektu je vytvořit Encyklopedii českého literárního samizdatu jako první krok k budoucí komplexní Encyklopedii českého samizdatu. Autoři hodlají prostřednictvím jednotlivých hesel charakterizovat ústřední i periferní samizdatové edice, časopisy, sborníky a představit osobnosti, jež se na utváření a provozu samizdatové komunikace podílely. Těžiště hesláře je umístěno do období 1948–1989, zejména kontextová hesla však zasáhnou též do období předchozího i následujícího, dotknou se souvislostí českého samizdatu s podobnými komunikačními okruhy v tehdejší východní Evropě a v odůvodněných případech překročí hranici samizdatu směrem k obecněji chápané nezávislé kultuře.

The economic aspect proves no discrepancies. All finances have been invested with a clear purpose. The published outputs follow the proposed aims of the project. The monograph shows the features of complexity (one third of the entries reaches above the original proposal) and quality that meets the highest standards of literary history and cultural lexicography.
