Magnetism of f-electron intermetallics

Project goals

The project is devoted to study of magnetic and other electronic properties of new or poorly-studied rare-earth and uranium intermetallics. Since they have very strong magnetic anisotropy, the study will be performed on high-quality single crystals grown for the first time. Magnetization, magnetic anisotropy, and magnetoelasticity (magnetostriction, magnetoacoustics, influence of external pressure), specific heat and electrical resistivity will be investigated in intermetallics with stoichiometries RCo4Al, R2Co17, RFe5Al7, R3Ru4Al12 (R is a rare-earth metal), Lu2Fe17-xRux as well as in uranium compounds UCo1-xOsxAl, U3T4Ge4 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu). We also plan to check existence and possibility of single-crystal growth for new interesting compounds, e.g., U3Fe2Ge7, U6Fe16Ge7. The investigation will combine both bulk and the microscopic methods. The work on the project will be done in close co-operation with Charles University and laboratories over the world in framework of long-time collaboration.

Předmětem projektu je studium magnetismu a s nim spojených fyzikálních vlastností nových a málo zkoumaných intermetalických systémů s prvky vzácných zemin a uranu. Vzhledem k tomu, že projevují silnou magnetickou anizotropii, studium bude provedeno na vysoce kvalitních monokrystalech, vypěstovaných vůbec poprvé. Magnetizace, magnetická anizotropie a magnetoelasticita (magnetostrikce, magnetoakustika, vliv externího tlaku) budou zkoumané v intermetalických sloučeninách se stechiometriemi RCo4Al, R2Co17, RFe5Al7, R3Ru4Al12 (R - prvek vzácných zemin), Lu2Fe17-xRux a v uranových sloučeninách UCo1-xOsxAl, U3T4Ge4 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu). Dále bude ověřena existence a možnost připravy monokrystalů nových sloučenin, U3Fe2Ge7 a U6Fe16Ge7.
