Non-double-couple mechanisms - a tool for monitoring the mode of fracturing

Project goals

The project aims to broaden the common seismological approach to the mechanism of seismic events by searching for more general phenomena than traditional shear slip. It will allow us to use the retrieved mechanism to detect the mode of fracturing and totrack its development in time. The non-shear fracturing of rock mass is manifested by occurrence of non-double-couple components in the moment tensor. To assess the reliability of non-shear fracture retrieval, the methodology must be upgraded by complementing with non-DC error analysis. Aimed to process large amounts of data, the procedure will be automated. Two applications are foreseen: (1) Mining tremors: existence of mined-out cavities results in a specific fracturing of the rock mass different fromnatural earthquakes. Its retrieval will help to discriminate mining tremors and earthquakes, and detect various types of the tremors. (2) Hydrofracturing in industrial wells: observing the mechanism of induced seismic events will enable to map the zonesof tensile fractures and, thus, to assess the effectivity of hydrofracturing.
