Pantheism and Panpsychism in the Renaissance and the Emergence of Secularism

Project goals

Pantheism and panpsychism are philosophical strains that view god in all things and everything to have a soul. This project will study the presence of these theories in the Renaissance and their impact on modernity. The 16th-century natural philosophers will be studied, their inspirations in the late Middle Ages, and their continuity in the 17th-18th centuries. Girolamo Cardano, Giordano Bruno, Francesco Patrizi in the Renaissance, and in early modernity René Descartes, Francis Bacon, and Thomas Hobbes and some Cambridge Platonists will be main sources, while late medieval authors like Raymond Lull, William of Occam, and John Duns Scotus and some commentaries on Peter Lombard will provide theological background.

Pantheismus a panpsychismus v renesanci a zrod sekularismu

  • Annotation in Czech

Předmětem studia budou Girolamo Cardano, Giordano Bruno, Francesco Patrizi v renesanci a v raném novověku René Descartes, Francis Bacon a Thomas Hobbes a někteří cambridgesští platonikové, zatímco teologické pozadí budou představovat pozdně středověcí autoři jako Raymond Lullus, Vilém Ockham a Jan Duns Scotus.
