Internet4Kids – Budování znalostí o internetu: perspektiva teorií konceptuální změny

Children often use the internet, yet it remains unexplored how they come to understand what it is and how it works. This project will find out what age-specific preconceptions children have about the internet’s structure and function, what they can learn about it, and where learning difficulties lie. We will conduct a microgenetic/cross-sectional mixed-methods study in which A) we examine preconceptions of three child-groups (Grades 4/5, 6/7, 8/9) and naïve teachers (N~200) about this domain, B) explain the topic to half of each child-group and upon re-examination compare them to the older subgroups, C) the other half will be later re-examined without additional teaching. We will use thematic, frequency and microgenetic learning analyses to describe participants’ knowledge elements in detail and systematize these elements and the process giving rise to them within a ‘knowledge in pieces’ conceptual change framework, which we will advance to this end. The project will contribute to the conceptual change research field and inform global efforts on updating digital literacy curricula.
