Efficient Government Policies during Pandemics

Project goals

The proposed research will provide an analytical framework for studying the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. We plan to combine the Mortensen-Pissarides model of a frictional labor market with the epidemiological SIR model and characterize the dynamics of wages and labor market flows during the pandemic. We then study the efficient government policies, and investigate their implications in terms of how they slow down the spread of the pandemics, or how they speed up the recovery. The proposed research is not only useful for understanding the impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic, but also for possible future pandemics, and for understanding business cycle fluctuations in general.

    Navrhovaný výzkum poskytne analytický rámec pro studium ekonomických následků pandemie COVID-19. Plánujeme zkombinovat Mortensen-Pissaridesův model frikčního trhu práce s epidemiologickým SIR modelem a charakterizovat dynamiku mezd a toků na trhu práce během pandemie. Následně plánujeme studovat efektivní vládní politiky, jejich vliv na šíření epidemie a rychlost následné hospodářské obnovy. Navrhovaný výzkum je užitečný nejen pro porozumění důsledků současné pandemie COVID-19, ale také pro budoucí možné pandemie a pro porozumění hospodářským cyklům obecně.
