Labour, Anger, Modernity: Urban protests and the “under-bourgeois” classes in the Austrian monarchy, 1789–1847
Annotation in Czech
Modernity was not created only by entrepreneurs, inventors and their machines. It also rested on the labour of many people who left the traditional communities and wage labour became the centre of their lives. These people are usually not considered part of the urban middle classes; on the contrary, they were often at risk of falling into precarity. Still, they have articulated and defended their interests. We want to explore how they conceptualised their situation, even if they expressed themselves through action rather than writing. This project will focus on social interactions and conflicts of various dimensions in selected cities, involving journeymen, factory workers, and 'the mob'. From the underlying 'moral economy', the project inquires into the 'morals' in which the idea of work, fair wage and just existence were anchored. We want to find out how the people who worked for a wage strove to maintain or improve their condition in the urban space, while pursuing the hypothesis that they formed a specific non-elite public sphere as an alternative to the bourgeois society.
