Causes of 15N/14N isotope differences among aerosol, fog, rime and vertical deposition: Toward robust Bayesian modeling of nitrogen sources
Annotation in Czech
In many countries worldwide, NOx emissions currently decrease as a result of pollution control, while NH3 emissions stagnate. Presently, little is known about the magnitude and isotope dynamics of horizontal deposition of NO3- and NH4+, the oxidation/neutralization products of these primary pollutants, relative to vertical deposition. To close this knowledge gap, we will study horizontal and vertical atmospheric inputs of NO3- and NH4+ at 16 Central European mountain-top and lowland sites. N isotope ratios, possibly affected by fractionations in the atmosphere, will be used to quantify contributions of 10 pollutant sources to reactive nitrogen inputs. Our basic research involving Bayesian isotope modeling can be instrumental in policy making decisions on measures to further limit NH3 emissions. Unlike (NH4)2SO4 whose origin is regional to global, NH4NO3 pollution is more local and can be effectively mitigated through national-level measures. The proposed research focuses on a secondary pollutant with the highest potential for national air quality improvement among all aerosol types.
