Plasmid-borne diazotrophy in basal filamentous cyanobacteria - a new adaptive freshwater niche?

  • Annotation in Czech

This project pioneers research on the ecological role of plasmid-encoded N₂ fixation in homocytous cyanobacteria. It focuses on the phylogenetically basal, earliest multicellular filamentous group of Pseudanabaenaceae. It explores how plasmid-borne diazotrophy expands the ecological niche of planktonic Pseudanabaena, investigating its environmental distribution, conditions and ecophysiological parameters inducing this type of N₂ fixation, and its contribution to N-limited freshwater ecosystems. It further investigates the evolutionary origins and potential horizontal transfer of this unique trait among cyanobacteria. A high-risk/high-gain objective is to establish a heterologous cyanobacterial model system in Synechocystis to study plasmid-mediated diazotrophy, providing a toolbox for future research. The project has the potential to improve our understanding of cyanobacterial N₂ fixation in a new ecological context, its distribution and impact in freshwater ecosystems.
