Artificial Intelligence in Legal Translation – An Empirical Approach
Annotation in Czech
The Project investigates the use of artificial intelligence in legal translation, responding to the generally felt need for empirical research in this rapidly developing field. The textual approach, involving Czech and two international languages (English and French), addresses translation quality of both raw and post-edited AI output. The analysis includes two representative legal genres and both translation directions. Quality-related findings are to be supplemented with questionnaire-based data informing about work practices and attitudes of Czech legal translators as regards the use of AI. Methodologically, the project is grounded in translation quality assessment, comparative legal analysis, AI-human interaction research, and questionnaire research. The project is supposed to describe and explain the benefits and risks of AI in legal translation, opening a series of topical questions, such as the treatment of system-specific legal terms, the limits of non-native post-editing, the efficiency of AI prompting, or the translators’ ethical awareness.
