    Exploring the potential of spatially sliding circulation classifications in climatological and climate change research

    Atmospheric circulation is a fundamental source of uncertainty in climate change projections. Therefore, along with the ongoing anthropogenic climate change, its better understanding is necessary. To this end, the concept of sliding circulation classifications has been introduced recently. This project will identify key questions in the methodology of sliding classifications and provide answers to them; i.a., which classification methods and which variables are suitable. The most suitable sliding classifications will be produced with global coverage and published in a data paper. The project will also estimate the degree to which circulation confounds the observed and projected future climate change globally and will examine in which climatological applications the new concept is usable. The developments of circulation classifications in the past twenty years will be surveyed and published in a review paper.
