Homeschooling - a tool in the culture wars over shaping human rights and democracy?

  • Annotation in Czech

Homeschooling (HS) is expanding worldwide, sparking debate about its compatibility with democratic principles. While proponents see HS as a parental right, critics see it as part of a global culture war over human rights and moral norms that undermines democracy and reduces it to possessive individualism. A key question is whether HS limits children's exposure to different perspectives and key democratic issues such as racism, multiculturalism and gender. Although potential risks of HS are widely discussed, there is a lack of empirical research to confirm or refute the validity of these assumptions. The project aims to fill this research gap, which makes it particularly relevant in today's ideologically divided world. It will use mixed methods to explore the ideological differences between the general population and HS families, and the adherence to the civic education curriculum in HS families. The findings will provide policy makers, educators and researchers with insights into the sensitive issue of balancing parental rights, state control and children's rights to education.
