Two Torah texts for two sanctuaries? The Samarian traditions in the Hebrew Bible

  • Annotation in Czech

Scholars have long suspected the existence of Samarian elements and traditions in some of the texts of the Torah as a text, which was in the second half of the first millennium BCE shared by two Yahwistic communities in the southern Levant, in Jerusalem and on Mt. Gerizim. New impetus for studying these Samarian influences was given by the results of the archaeological excavations of the Samarian Yahwistic sanctuary on Mt. Gerizim. Moreover, now it appears that the idea of the two Torah texts for the two Yahwistic sanctuaries, Jerusalem and Gerizim, was embedded in the text of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Torah, and in the Deuteronomistic historiography, already in antiquity. This fact, in connection with other Samarian elements in the Torah, sheds a new light on the involvement of the Samarian scribes in the composition of some of the Torah texts. Therefore, it becomes necessary to analyse anew the Samarian elements in the Torah in their literary and historical contexts, and also their reflection elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible (TaNaK).
