    The growth and decay of vast ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere are a defining feature of the past few million years of Earth’s history. But when did these great ice sheets first arise and why? The dynamics of ice sheets matters to all because climate, sea level and global ice are fundamentally linked in ways that we must understand in today’s changing climate system. We will quantify the timing and extent of North America’s first large-scale Laurentide Ice Sheets (LIS), which at maximum extent were the largest on Earth and hence profoundly affected global sea levels. To achieve this goal, we will date the LIS deposits along its former southern limits using cosmogenic nuclides and we will apply sediment fingerprinting to study the ice-sheet dynamics. Thanks to the comprehensive scope of our approach and our previous study of the early Eurasian Ice Sheets, we are set to deliver an incisive new picture of the LIS and the Northern Hemisphere glaciations and their relationship to global sea levels during the critical onset of glacial intensification between 3–2 million years ago.
