Effect of acyclic nucleosid phosphonates and other antimetabolites against plant viruses
Project goals
The project will study the effect of synthetic inhibitors of polymerases on replication and movement of viruses in plants. The project will be the first assessment of phytotoxicity and antiviral activity of acyclic nucleosid phosphonates (ANPs), PMEA, PMEDAP, PMPA and HPMPC against plant DNA virus (CaMV) and RNA viruses (TYMV, RaMV, TuMV) with different replication mechanisms. The effect of ANPs will be followed on symptom expression, formation of virions and accumulation of viral genomes. The effect ofANPs will be compared with Ribavirin, so far the most efficient and practically used antiviral compound against plant viruses, which will be used as a standard. The project will fill the gap in our knowledge about possible elimination of DNA viruses from plants. The results could be exploited in the production of virus-free vegetatively propagated crops (potato, fruits, grapevine, hops, ornamentals), and virus-free germplasm collections used for crop breeding and protection of biodiversity.

Project name in Czech
Účinnost acyklických nukleosid fosfonátů a dalších antimetabolitů proti rostlinným virům
Annotation in Czech
Vyhodnotit protivirový účinek a fytotoxicitu acyklických nukleosid fosfonátů (PMEA,PMDAP,PMPA a HPMPC) proti rostlinnému dsDNA viru a RNA virům (TYMV,RaMV a TuMV), s rozdílným replikačním mechanismem, v porovnání s Ribavirinem, pomocí nově navrženého invitro modelu na brukvovitých rostlinách.
