Chances of Realist Epistemology in the Face of Modern Critique

html,body { border: 0px; font-family: "Times New Roman" }Historical rift between the philosophical tradition of scholastic Aristotelianism and the modern philosophy is often described as a turn from metaphysics to epistemology. A critical attitude to the epistemic assumptions of the preceding tradition is a typical feature of modern thought, to the effect of eventual destruction of the traditional realist and receptivist epistemology and replacing it with alternative conceptions. This process culminates in Kant, whose "critique" essentially determined practically the entire subsequent continental tradition. A more significant comeback of realism can be discerned only within the confines of some strands of Anglo-Saxon analytical philosophy of the 20th century.The basic goal of the proposed research is a critical evaluation of the possibilities of defence of the traditional realist stances in epistemology, in the face of the modern critique - making use not just of the contemporary analytic aproach, but attempting to combine it with Aristotelian-Scholastic conception. The purpose is to achieve an articulated, syntetic picture of the epistemological problem, integrating both modern and traditional methods and achievements.

html,body { border: 0px; }Historický předěl mezi aristotelsko-scholastickou filosofickou tradicí a novověkou filosofií bývá často popisován jako obrat od metafyzické problematiky k problematice epistemologické. Novověké myšlení je charakteristické kritikou epistemologických předpokladů předchozí tradice a vyúsťuje postupně v destrukci tradiční realisticko-receptivistické epistemologie a její nahrazení alternativními koncepcemi. Tento proces vrcholí u Kanta, jehož „kritikou“ je zásadně určena celá následná kontinentální tradice. Masivnější návrat k realismu pozorujeme teprve v rámci jistých proudů anglosaské tradice analytické filosofie 20. století.Základním záměrem plánovaného výzkumu je kritické posouzení možností obhajoby realistických pozic v epistemologii tváří v tvář novověké kritice, a to s využitím jak současných přístupů analytické filosofie, tak klasických aristotelsko-scholastických konceptů. Cílem je dosažení artikulovaného syntetického pohledu na epistemologickou problematiku, čerpajícího jak ze současné analytické tradice, tak z motivů aristotelské tradice.

The only reason for a delayed final report after the third and final year of the project realisation was the fact that the two main outcomes of the project were not yet published. Otherwise the project was succesfully accomplished. In 2014 the two publications appeared and were handed over to GAČR. For this reason the whole project can be considered as succesfully accomplished.
