Insects are gaining traction in Europe as sustainable protein sources for food and feed. Their farming supports a circular economy and reduces environmental pressures linked to meat production. Despite their nutritional benefits, concerns remain about their seamless integration into diets. Building on the INPROFF project, INPROFF2 advances insect research, emphasizing safety and health assessments of insects fed agri-sidestreams (WP2) and investigating anti-nutrients, bioactive compounds, and contaminants (WP3). In vitro studies will assess their cytotoxicity and effects on lactobacilli adhesion. Additionally, the project explores insect bioactive compounds’ role in fat deposition and obesity prevention.New insect-based products, including fermented insect biomass, will be developed (WP4) and assessed for nutrition and consumer acceptance in Slovenia and the Czech Republic. A database of insect proteins will be integrated into NutriBase (WP5). The project unites international experts to drive innovation in insect farming, food safety, and product development.
