Doing business at home and abroad: Corruption & social norms
Annotation in Czech
This project examines how Czech businesses define and respond to corruption in both domestic and international settings. While much of the existing research on corruption concentrates on public institutions, this study shifts the focus to the private sector—an area often overlooked despite its critical role in shaping corruption dynamics. Using a framework that combines agency, institutional, and neo-institutional theory, the project explores how organisational features—such as size, sector, ownership, and exposure to foreign markets—influence perceptions of ethical conduct and corrupt behaviour. A multi-method design underpins the research, including the creation of original survey instruments, a nationally representative firm-level survey, cross-national comparisons of public attitudes via the ISSP, and qualitative case studies of Czech firms. The study pays special attention to how businesses adjust their practices when operating across environments with varying corruption risks.
