Application of advanced analytical techniques as a tool for provenance determination of carbonate stones for decorative purposes
Project goals
The proposed postdoc project called "Application of advanced analytical techniques as a tool for provenance determination of carbonate stones for decorative purposes" is concerned with sourcing of artefacts in terms of the multi-method approach. In the study, mineralogical-petrographic characteristics (optical and electron microscopy, petrographic image analysis, cathodoluminescence study, X-ray powder diffraction), geochemical variances (stable isotope ratio analysis, Raman microspectrometry) and physical properties (bulk magnetic susceptibility) of the studied rocks and artefacts are analyzed. The results obtained have significant implications for a) the establishing a suitability or limits of experimental techniques b) the finding a methodical key to assign marble artefacts with rock types and c) the considerable enlargement of the Czech database of dimension stones. The output data are contributing to the basic geological study and also to the applied research such as the monument preservation, the archaeology or the history of art.
