Tracing the development of children´s understanding of others´emotions and mental states

Project goals

To explain and predict others' behaviour, children gradually come to an understanding that people have private minds, consisting of desires, emotions, beliefs, and intentions. Yet, recent neuro-scientific studies dissociate human ability to understand the mental from the emotional states of others claiming that understanding emotions develops earlier in ontogeny and follows a different developmental path than the ability to represent others' minds. To provide behavioral data in support of this hypothesis, the proposed study will examine the development of 5-, 7- and 9-year-olds' social-cognitive skills (understanding meaning, belief, intention, attitude) and their empathizing skills (understanding emotions). Controlling for language competence, the study will map a trajectory of children's development of mentalizing and empathizing skills. Since the data will be gathered in Czech in a way to be directly comparable to a set of existing data from English speakers, subsequent cross-linguistic analyses will identify the role of language and culture in interpreting the minds of others.
