Interpretation of Czech literary modernism in German-language journals 18801910
Project goals
This project aims to bring together and compare various interpretations of early Czech literary modernism in German-language modernist journals from 1880 to 1910. It focuses primarily on criticism, intermediaries and those German and Austrian modernist journals in which debates took place on the nature of modernist literature and on the literatures of individual centres and regions. In contrast to previous works the project does not anticipate continuity in intermediary activity, but rather points out the parallel nature of the various interpretations of Czech literary modernism, examining them in their specific aesthetic, cultural and political context. As both Czech and German authors were writing about Czech literature, the mediation of Czech literature in the German language environment presents a possible approach towards the study of mutual relations between Czech and German modernism from the Czech lands; of key importance here is the concept of a supraregional context defined as centring around Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Prague, of which both streams endeavoured to be a part.

Interpretace české moderny v německých časopisech 1880-1910

Projekt si klade za úkol soustředit a porovnat různorodé interpretace rané české literární moderny v německojazyčných modernistických časopisech v letech 1880-1910. Zaměřuje se především na kritiku, jednotlivé prostředkovatelské osobnosti a na ty časopisy německé a rakouské moderny, v nichž probíhaly debaty o povaze moderní literatury ve vztahu k jednotlivým regionům a centrům. Oproti předchozím pracím projekt nepředpokládá kontinuitu prostředkující činnosti, spíše poukazuje na paralelnost různých interpretací české literární moderny a zkoumá je v jejich konkrétním estetickém, osobnostním, kulturním i politickém kontextu. Vzhledem k tomu, že o české literatuře psali čeští i němečtí autoři, představuje prostředkování české literatury do německojazyčného prostředí rovněž možný přístup ke studiu vzájemných vztahů mezi českou a německou modernou z českých zemí; klíčové je přitom hledisko nadregionálního kontextu vymezeného centry Berlín - Mnichov - Vídeň - Praha, jehož se oba proudy snažily být součástí.

Resolved project brought namely in the form of final monography impressive scientific outcomes which would be crucially important for the area of literary history and theory not only in Czech but in the international context as well. Methodology is without visible mistakes and right scientific attitudes toward text materials were assured by quality of final biography.
