Sociological Critique of Aesthetic Autonomy

Project goals

The aim of the project is a systematic analysis of the logical status of the aesthetic judgment in the context of the sociological critique of the thesis of autonomy of aesthetic value. 1) The first part of the project will be devoted to the critical reconstruction of the traditional ideas of autonomy of the aesthetic value, i.e. to the explanation of relevant historical conceptions and instructions how to achieve an unprejudiced and objective aesthetic judgment. 2) The second part of the project will offer a systematic explanation of the critique of aesthetic autonomy from the part of cultural studies (feminist critique of aesthetics, critique of the difference between the high and popular art) and sociology dealing with the interpretation of statistic findings related to cultural consumption (sociological critique of the judgment of taste, pecuniary standards of taste). 3) In the third part of the project the traditionalist ahistorical approach to the judgment of taste will be confronted with the sociological criticism and contemporary aesthetic relativist skepticism.

    Sociologická kritika estetické autonomie

  • Annotation in Czech

Cílem projektu je systematická analýza logického statusu estetického soudu v kontextu sociologické kritiky teze o autonomii estetické hodnoty. 1) První část projektu je věnována kritické rekonstrukci tradičních koncepcí autonomie estetické hodnoty, tj. výkladu relevantních teorií a návodů, jak dosáhnout nezaujatého a objektivního estetického soudu. 2)  Druhá část projektu je zaměřena na systematický výklad kritiky estetické autonomie ze strany kulturálních studií (feministická kritika estetiky, kritikarozlišení mezi vysokým a populárním uměním) a sociologie opírající se o statistická zjištění ohledně kulturní spotřeby (sociologická kritika vkusového soudu, pekuniární standardy vkusu). 3) Ve třetí části části bude konfrontováno tradiční ahistorické pojetí estetického soudu se sociologickou kritikou a estetickým relativismem.
