Habitat selection by prodators: the effect of competition

Project goals

Competitive mechanisms which play a role in food-webs are one of the most challenging task of contemporary theoretical population biology. The aim of the proposed grant is to elucidate habitat selection behaviour of two predators with different life strategies competing for a common prey. The study will bring together both theoretical modeling and experimental verification of mathematical predictions. The model will be derived from the Lotka-Volterra competitive system and will provide analytical descriptions of isolegs and spatial population distributions. Two model predator-prey systems will be used in experiments: fishes (gruppy, sworldtail, Barbus tetrazona) amd mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis, Typhlodromus pyri and Tetranychus urticae).

Výběr habitatu u predátorů: vliv kompetice

  • Project results evaluation

New knowledge on spatial distribution of two species of predators sharing common food source in a patchy environment was obtained. Fish model system agreed with theoretical predictions; behavior of predatory mites was more complex and did not fit IFD.
