Karyotype evolution of the spider superfamilies Eresoidea and Dysderoidea

Project goals

With respect to the karyology, spiders are the best explored arachnids. However, knowledge of spider karyology is still unsatisfactory. Majority of studied species belong to a few families of entelegyne araneomorphs. The aim of our project is to analysekaryology of two araneomorph superfamilies, Eresoidea and Dysderoidea. First group is noted for evolution of sociality. In contrast to the other spiders, dysderoids exhibit holocentric chromosomes. In spite of this, karyology of both superfamilies is mostly unknown. The basic karyotype data will be obtained in selected species. Based on availability of material, additional data will be obtained by banding, FISH with rDNA probe, and electron microscopy of sex chromosome pairing. Obtained data will be ofconsiderable importance to understand karyotype evolution, phylogeny, and speciation of both groups. Moreover, they can be relevant to evolution of holocentric and sex chromosomes as well as evolution of spider sociality.

Karyotypová evoluce pavouků nadčeledí Eresoidea a Dysderoidea

  • Annotation in Czech

Pokud to dovolí dostupnost materiálu, stanovíme nejen základní charakteristiky karyotypu a meiózy, alei distribuci heterochromatinu, nukleolárních organizátorů a ultrastrukturu párování pohlavních chromozomů.

  • Project results evaluation

Obtained data allowed us to reconstruct karyotype evolution of the spider families Dysderoidea a Eresoidea as well as to explain origin of unusual spider gonosomes. Specific mechanisms hamper pairing of homeological gonosomes originated by duplications.
