Crystal defects and hydrogen storage

Project goals

Technique ECAP-BP will be developed to achieve high deformability of materials suitable for hydrogen storage. According to combinatorial research of magnesium additives the alloys for severe plastic deformation will be prepared. Arising microstructures will be studied, fully characterized on selected samples, and the effect of sample preparation on the hydrogen storage will be examined. The kinetics of hydrogen absorption and desorption will be conducted in collaboration with our partners. The structures arising during severe plastic deformation and their effect on hydrogen storage will be modelled.

Our equipment designed for intensive plastic deformation enables the preparation of fine-grained bulk samples with desirable physical properties. We have demonstrated a role of planar defects in the formation of hydrides by electron microscopy observations. We have proposed a mechanism of displacive transformation of magnesium hydride structure to improve the hydrogen desorption.
