High-energy collisions of ions with complex organic molecules

Project goals

The goal of the project is to (i) built the specially designed experimental apparatus for studies focused on high-energy ion-induced excitation, ionization and dissociation of complex organic and bioorganic molecules, and (ii) using this new instrument to perform series of experiments with selected ions and molecules aiming at understanding elementary processes connected with ultrafast high-energy interactions of ions with molecules in the gas phase, namely the energy transfer and its deposition in both collision partners and their subsequent chemical reactions. It has to be noted that a substantial portion of expensive components required to build the proposed experimental setup (mass spectrometer, quadrupole mass filter, and some electronics) is already available in the proposer’s laboratory and thus the financial demands of this project are within the limits of the public tender, program LD-COST CZ.

    Vysokoenergetické srážky iontů se složitými organickými molekulami

    Cílem projektu je zkonstruovat, uvést do provozu a ověřit technické parametry aparatury pro studium srážek vysokoenergetických iontů s molekulami a s její pomocí provést sérii experimetů s vhodně vybranými projektilovými ionty a řadou organických a bioorganických molekul různé komplexity. Důraz bude kladen jednak na identifikaci fragmentačních produktů vznikajících z bombardovaných molekul, a také na měření kinetické energie projektilových iontů a na sledování jejich eventuálních chemických přeměn. To ve svém důsledku umožní určovat množství excitační energie deponované v molekulách během jejich interakce s projektilovými ionty.

    During the project LD14024, all the set goals were achieved. The new experimental apparatus for studies on high-energy collisions of ions with molecules was constructed and commissioned, which was then used for a series of planned experiments. Results stemmed from these experiments were published so far in the form of five articles in scientific journals and seven oral or poster communications on international conferences.
