Tycho Brahe: Supporting Ground-based Astronomical Observations
Project goals
The project Tycho Brahe supports the ground-based astronomical observations with the interferometer ALMA operating at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths and with the 2.2m optical telescope MPG/ESO. Both instruments reside at ESO observatories in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile with nearly ideal conditions for observing the sky. In the frame of this proposal we aim to use 50 observing nights at the 2.2m telescope from the collaborating institution MPIA in Heidelberg. We also propose to open 4new positions, with two of them for specialists currently working at ESO in Chile. The project will support the Czech node of the European ALMA Regional Center in Ondřejov and contribute to creation of a working platform in the Astronomical Institute ASCR for assistance with preparation of observing proposals and processing of observed data. The proposed observations with both ALMA and 2.2m telescope will significantly extend the observing program of the Institute and will contribute to the completionof projects in the areas of the solar physics, interstellar matter, hot stars, and evolution of galaxies.

Project results evaluation
Project Tycho Brahe: Supporting Ground-based Astronomical Observations“ predicts presence of warm gas inside of young massive star clusters, it supports the possibility to observe the Sun with the interferometer ALMA and other observational proposals, it shows the role of gravity in star formation in expanding shells, it determines the relation of stellar pulsations to their mass loss, it describes the evolution of close binary stars with a compact companion and it verifies the reality of planetary systems near the selected stars.
