Investigation of Phase Transformations in Metastable Beta-Ti Alloys for Biomedical Applicatipons

Project goals

The objective of this basic research project is to optimize properties of selected Ti alloys for biomedical applications. The partial objectives allowing to meet the main objective are the following: 1) The investigation of kinetics of omega and alpha phase formation in TIMETAl LCB and Ti-Mo alloys. 2) The influence of alpha phase precipitates along grain boundaries on the fatigue endurance of TIMETAl LCB alloy. 3) The investigation of mechanisms of spinodal decomposition of beta phase in TiOsteum alloyand the following alpha phase precipitation.

Studium fázových transformací v metastabilních slitinách beta-Ti pro využití v biomedicíně

Experimental investigation in 2015 was focused on TIMETAL LCB and Ti-15Mo alloys. A lot of new information about phase transformations during the decomposition of the solid solution were obtained. Next to standard experiments (electron microscopy and electrical resistivity) the unique techniques of small-angle X-ray scattering and anomalous diffraction of synchrotron radiation (ESRF Grenoble). Main output is a publication in Acta Materialia.
