  • Annotation in Czech

Realizace projektu hraničního výzkumu v oblasti environmentální mikrobiologie a biogeochemie MARCH4G má za cíl kvantifikovat potenciál subglaciálního ekosystému pod Grónským ledovcem produkovat a uvolňovat metan (CH4) do atmosféry a ovlivňovat tak globální cyklus metanu

  • Project results evaluation

The project MARCH4G tested the hypothesis that the accelerating melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) causes methane release and so provides potential positive climatic feedback. Our results significantly advanced understanding of the functioning of the GrIS subglacial ecosystem and brought evidence of pervasive export of methane originating from the microbial degradation of Holocene-aged organic matter along the W margin of the ice sheet. The amount of methane exported is however not significant compared to other natural sources in the Arctic.
