Základním posláním centra je ve spolupracích v mezinárodních střediscích fyziky částic zkoumat základní strukturu hmoty a hledat zákonitosti mikrosvěta. Centrum vychází z existujícího Společného pracoviště subnukleární fyziky MFF UK a FzÚ AVČRa má za cílzajistit kvalitní společnou infrastrukturu, nutnou pro přípravu a provoz experimentů, zpracování dat a jejich teoretickou analýzu a umožnit posílení stávajících pracovních týmů
