In vitro toxicological comparison of extracts of stressed transgenic and non-transgenic crops

Project goals

The aims of this project are: i) High-throughput screening of plant extracts comparing transgenic plant and its counterpart in order to a) evaluate the approaches which were used for genetic manipulation/edition from the toxicological point of view and b) evaluate if the selected genetic manipulation has any effect on toxicological profile of the plant species. ii) High-throughput screening of plant extracts comparing transgenic plant and its counterpart when exposed to stress in order to determine if the GM plants are better prepared to cope with the environmental stressor, synthetize less secondary metabolites and are therefore less toxic.

  • Project results evaluation

Protocols for high-throughput testing of toxicity, especially endocrine disruption and genotoxicity, including metabolic activation, have been validated. These protocols were used for the toxicological assessment of mycotoxins – secondary metabolites of fungi. Transgenic barley, soy and potato were subjected to appropriate stress, their extracts were assessed from the view of safety for consumers.
