Reactivity of negative ions in the gas phase

The project will deal with the fundamental aspects of physicochemical processes of the interactions of until recently somewhat neglected negative ions with molecules in the gas phase. In particular, the thermal dependence of kinetics of selected chemical reactions, which play an important role in the chemistry of the atmosphere, combustion, and also in astrochemistry. The reactions of selected negative ions, which could lead to the formation of high molecular compounds and aerosols discovered in the upper atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan, will also be studied. The aim of the project is to obtain the necessary and hitherto missing data (rate constants, collision cross sections, branching rations etc.), which will contribute to a detailed understanding of complex physicochemical systems such as the planetary atmospheres or plasma, as well as to the development and improvement of analytical detection and diagnostic methods based on the interaction of ions with molecules, by using special methods of mass spectrometry and theoretical chemistry.

During the LTC20062 project, most of the goals were achieved, which brought new knowledge in gas phase ion chemistry and allowed a better understanding of the chemical processes in planetary atmospheres, plasma processes, or fundamentals of atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry. Many results have been or will be published shortly in articles in peer-reviewed journals.
