The aim of the proposed research program is to establish a new physical paradigm of sustainable IT devices by combining heat, charge and spin transport in compensated magnetic materials. Conventional devices are based on ferromagnets which, however, are unfavorable for heat back-conversion to electricity, for non-dissipative spin transport, and high-speed operation. A recently discovered new class of compensated magnetic materials - altermagnets - could resolve these principle limitations of ferromagnets. The heat-to-charge conversion and spin-wave propagation in altermagnets is, however, an uncharted territory. The DC will build on the PI’s track record and the combined expertise of the Czech-German partners. The three pillar projects aim to demonstrate key spin-caloritronics phenomena in altermagnets for memory and heat-charge conversion devices, develop a new magnetic microscopy for exploring and exploiting these phenomena, and identify and characterize suitable altermagnetic material candidates. Although each of the projects is self-standing, pursuing the projects jointly will have a significant synergetic effect. The research program is based on a previously unrecognized class of magnets. Because of this ground-breaking nature, the results can have also impact on a range of scientifically and technologically highly relevant fields beyond spin-caloritronics and magnonics, including spintronics, field-effect electronics, superconductivity or neuromorphic IT.
