The risk assessment of uptake and accumulation of arsenic and its compounds by plant communities growing in soils substantially contaminated by mining activities

Project goals

Informations concerning arsenic behavior in soil in former mining areas, fluctuation of arsenic among main soil fractions, availability of arsenic and its compounds for plants, and transformation and translocation of these compounds within plant are limited. The main aims of the proposed project can be presented as follows: To describe properly the composition of plant communities growing in the areas of interest. To investigate the contents of arsenic and its compounds in aboveground biomass of individual plant species and mobile pools of arsenic in related soils. To elucidate relationships between geochemical, mineralogical and pedological characteristics of the areas of interest and composition of plant communities as well as the plant arsenic uptake and transformation. To assess the potential risk of plant biomass growing in contaminated soil for grazing animals and finally for population living in the vicinity of the former mining areas.

    Hodnocení rizik příjmu a kumulace arsenu a jeho sloučenin rostlinnými společenstvy na půdách významně kontaminovaných důlní činností

    Byl prokázán jednoznačný vliv úrovně kontaminace půdy na složení, strukturu a kvalitu rostlinného pokryvu v oblastech kontaminovaných důlní činností. Takováto systematická studie v podobně zasažených oblastech České republiky ještě provedena nebyla, objevují se pouze ojedinělé práce zaměřené na úroveň kontaminace rostlinné biomasy rostoucí v těchto oblastech toxickými prvky. Cílem práce je tedy zmapovat druhové zastoupení a četnost jednotlivých rostlinných druhů ve zmíněné oblasti ve vztahu k úrovni kontaminace půdy, geochemickým a fyzikálně-chemickým vlastnostem půdy a schopnosti jednotlivých druhů rostlin kumulovat toxické prvky v nadzemní biomase a kořenech. Získané výsledky budou hodnoceny v kontextu možného rizika vstupu toxických prvků do potravního řetězce a eventuelního ohrožení obyvatel sledované oblasti.

    The objective was to describe contents of As and its compounds in ruderal plants growing in the areas of former Au and Ag mining. Three such areas were documented and the results showed ability of plants to distribute As to different organoarsenicals.
