The development of novel analytical approaches for early diagnosis of adenomatous polyps and prevention of colorectal carcinoma
Project goals
The project is focused on the detection and the development of novel analytical approaches for early diagnosis of adenomatous polyps and early stages of colorectal cancer with the aim to contribute to the improvement of the secondary and primary prevention of this frequent malignity. Colorectal cancer is a disease, which starts by forming benign mucosal polyps. Their early detection is a very effective tool of preventive oncology, because the removal of risk polyps leads to decrease of the probability of their malignant transformation. Raman spectroscopy has a great potential for medicinal applications because it is highly sensitive to biochemical changes and thus capable to detect specific molecular abnormalities in molecules in the tissue, which can not be detected by conventional diagnostic methods. The project will be focused on in vivo and ex vivo spectroscopic analysis of colon tissue samples with the purpose to identify the new markers for early diagnosis of pathological changes. Comparison of the results will be used for the assessment of their sensitivity and specificity.

Projekt je zaměřen na hledání a vývoj nových analytických přístupů včasné diagnostiky adenomatozních polypů a raných stádií kolorektálního karcinomu s cílem přispět ke zlepšení sekundární i primární prevence této velmi časté malignity. Kolorektální karcinom je nemoc začínající tvorbou slizničních polypů, které nemají nádorový charakter. Jejich včasné zachycení se stává užitečným nástrojem onkologické prevence, kdy odstraněním rizikových polypů dochází významně ke snížení pravděpodobnosti jejich maligní transformace. V posledních letech se v oblasti včasné diagnostiky stále víc uplatňuje Ramanova spektroskopie, a to pomocí své schopnosti zaznamenat rozdíly chemického složení normálních a abnormálních biologických vzorků, které není možné odhalit konvenčními postupy klinické diagnostiky. Projekt bude zaměřený na in vivo a ex vivo spektroskopickou analýzu bioptických vzorků střevní tkáně s cílem identifikovat nové markery pro včasnou diagnostiku patologických změn. Porovnání výsledků těchto přístupů bude použito pro odhad jejich citlivosti a specificity.

Project results evaluation
1. The development of new spectroscopic methods for the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer is undoubtedly beneficial to society as a whole. 2. The results obtained are adequate in terms of the development and application of spectroscopic methods. Clinically oriented outcomes could be more. 3. Low-invasive diagnostic methods have practical relevance. A number of students have participated in the project as part of their master and doctoral theses. 4. Outputs in the form of 12 original articles in impacted journals exceeded the planned target. 5. I do not see any shortcomings in the compliance with the project specifications and in the spending of funds.
